What makes this car special is the unique Holden Racing Team “Reverse Livery” that it was raced with by Craig Lowndes at Winton Motor Raceway.
During Round 8 of the 1999 V8 Supercars Championship at Calder Park, Craig Lowndes managed to survive one of the most spectacular crashes in V8 Supercars history. After Lowndes’ recently built Holden VT Commodore was bumped sideways at the start of Race 2, the right rear wheel dug into the track causing the car to tip onto its roof and slide for some 200-250 metres down the main straight. Upon coming into contact with the grass at the side of the track the car was forced over the safety wall on the edge of the track and came to rest after some 5 and a half full rotations in the air. Amazingly, Lowndes survived the incident with a bruised elbow and ligament damage to his knee, which required surgery. Due to his injuries, Lowndes was side-lined for Round 9 of the Championship in Symmons Plains, Tasmania.
The Holden Racing Team re-commissioned the VS Commodore that Lowndes had previously driven to his first Australian Touring Car Championship and also to victory at the 1996 Bathurst 1000.
Due to the special circumstances in which the car was brought back to HRT Spec, it was given a new livery, whilst still displaying the same colours that made HRT recognisable. The livery was reversed, with the Blue at the front of the car instead of the rear as it had been in the past.
Craig Lowndes returned to racing at Round 10 of the Championship in Winton, driving the Reverse Livery VS Commodore and despite the massive accident and missing a round he went on to win his 3rd Touring Car Championship in only his 3rd full season in the series.
