When the two door Monaro GTS was released to the Australian motoring public in July 1971 it proved incredibly popular, being an all new design, the fourth all new Holden body produced in ten years. It was commended for it's eye-catching pillarless coupe roof line and its wrap-over rear window, the forward-reaching front and deep grille looked to be devouring the road ahead, flowing rear lines and pronounced ridges over the front guard gave it a compact, ground-hugging look
With the confidence of almost a quarter of a million of the much loved HQ range already on the road, the Monaro GTS coupe was upgraded in 1973 to coincide with the release of the four door GTS.
The monocoque construction and all new four-wheel coil spring suspension provided superior ride and handling and delivered a smoother, safer, more elegant car than any previous Holden. Praised for its advanced features and individual styling, the HQ range represented a more sophisticated design direction for Australian made cars, while delivering the rugged durability and family-size roominess expected by Holden buyers.
The HQ was the largest selling model range to date for Holden and would ensure Holden’s title of Australia’s No. 1 car manufacturer. The HQ became an automotive icon of the period.
