The 1970 Bathurst, held on 4th of October at the Mount Panorama Circuit was to be dominated by the factory backed Ford XW Falcon. The Ford Team wanted to win at any cost, so not surprising qualifying saw the factory cars lockout the first three positions on the grid. They had Fred Gibson and Barry Seton in one car, Bruce McPhee in another and Allan Moffat in a third. Moffat managed Pole, McPhee, 2nd. Gibson qualified with a time of 2:53.6, putting him 3rd on the grid. Interestingly there were 16 XW's Falcons in the race, most of them dealer-entered. The paring of Gibson and Seton in the 62E brought much experience to the role, both drivers had previous won at the Mountain, Seton in 1965 and Gibson in 1967, but alas the 62E, running well early in the race, was forced to retire with a differential problem after 33 laps, but the Factory Team strategy paid off, with Moffat finishing 1st and McPhee 2nd in the race.
