After the conclusion of the 1982 Australian Touring Car Championship, Peter Brock, in his Holden Dealer Team VC Commodore, had scored more points than Dick Johnson who would become the eventual series Champion. But, the use of not yet homologated engine heads on the cars saw Brock disqualified from all but two rounds of the championship, namely, Round 1 at Sandown and Round 3 at Symmons Plains Raceway. The matter between CAMS and the HDT ended in Victorian supreme court with Brock agreeing to the loss of points and the Championship to avoid a three month suspension. The suspension would mean missing out on the all important Bathurst, which was Brock's priority. Therefore, Brock’s official results were 2nd place at Sandown and a 1st Place at Symmons Plains. The original tally (prior to exclusions) had Brock on 65, Johnson 57. At Symmons Plains Brock started third on the grid, Johnson took pole. Brock got a poor start but by the fourth lap was astern of the Blue falcon and looking confident. The rest of the field did not look so stable. Brock weighed his opportunities, then made a neat passing move with twelve laps to go and was never headed, possibly assisted by the fading rear shock absorbers on the Johnson Falcon.
It was after the race that the Commodores were stripped and Brock and two others, Cullen and Geissler were judged to have been using illegally-modified heads.
