Holden VR Commodore 1995 Bathurst 3rd Place

For the 1995 Bathurst 1000, Wayne Gardner was partnered with Neil Crompton in the #7 Coca-Cola Racing Holden VR Commodore, starting 4th on the grid with a Top Ten Shootout lap time of 2:12.5422.

Gardner made the perfect getaway at the beginning of the race, with a bit of wheel spin he surged past the other cars, making it to Hell Corner alone and in the lead. But the gap slowly closed as the race progressed until the lead nine cars ran nose to tail like a multi-car high-speed train across the mountain.
On lap 6 Steven Richards in the #2 Holden VR Commodre took over the lead from Gardner and from there it was a challenge for the Coca-Cola Racing Commodore to hold position. The day’s temperature was warming causing the tyres to over-heat, but as the fuel load reduced the car became more manageable, although not much faster. Gardner and Crompton had settled into a consistent fourth position, when Crompton handed back to Gardner for the run home, climbing one position. Crompton and Gardner had driven faultlessly, and as fast as the Commodore and tyres would allow. They completed the 161 laps in 6:20:38.2 to earn the third place on the finisher’s podium of the Great Race.
