VJ Charger Highway Patrol Vehicle

The Charger caused a very big impact on the Australian car market and it soon came to the attention of the Police. Some VH models were tested and adopted by various Police units. It was with the VJ model that specially built Chargers were made for Police duty. These cars had K codes as did the sedan and wagon models built for Police use. Initially in NSW, unmarked cars were used by the STP (Special Traffic Patrol).
These were VJ 265 4 speed manuals, standard Chargers, VJ-M-29. The important Police pack code was K10. Numerous modifications were made for Police service in the area of engine performance and handling. Like the S35 Police High Performance Suspension Package - heavy rear springs, large diameter torsion bars, sway bar and heavy-duty shock absorbers borrowed from the VH track pack. The K10 option included other features like, hazard warning lights. Speed windscreen wiper blades, driving lamps and a Police speedometer mounted on the console. This set the pattern for Police Chargers to come. Base model cars with some important brake and handling upgrades to compliment the already well performed Charger. From the VJ to the VK and CL, the K option evolved too, from K10 right through to K18, an option pack for the South Australian police CM Charger. The fact that the Charger was used for highway patrol work by the Police throughout its production life from about 1973 to 1978 is testamony to the Charger’s strength and reliability.
