1984 was to be the final year of the spectacular Group C category with CAMS announcing that new FIA rules were to replace Australia’s home grown formula in January 1985.
Practice confirmed that the 1984 Bathurst race was going to be very close, with the Top 10 blanketed by only 2.07 seconds and featuring 5 different marques, with pole position going to the Nissan Bluebird of George Fury and Gary Scott. Although missing out on the Top 10 shoot-out, the Warren Cullen and Alan Jones pairing in the Kmart backed Holden VK Commodore were well positioned with 13th on the starting grid.

The flag dropped on a record equalling 63 cars, but the race was short lived being restarted before one lap was even completed, after a major accident involving Tom Walkinshaw in his Jaguar XJS. The Jaguar’s clutch had failed and the rear of the grid were unsighted to the stationary car.
At half race distance the Kmart car was battling with a rear brake issue, but had worked their way through the field to be in a fourth position. By lap 102 they were in second position, with the race for the podium fiercely contested. Alan Jones came into the pits for fuel on lap 158, but disaster struck when the engine did not want to restart. 75 seconds were lost in the pits before rejoining the race in fourth position, where they finished the race.
