Before the dust had settled on the 1971 Bathurst race, both Ford and General Motors Holden were well into development of their new model programs for 1972. But after an explosive article in the Sydney Herald newspaper stating that the two manufacture’s were building
160 mph ‘supercars’, the Federal Parliament put pressure on CAMS to change the regulations. With the new racecars shelved, the main competitors cars for the 1972 Bathurst were very similar to the cars that lined up for the 1971 race.
Practice for the 1972 Bathurst started in the rain, with tyre choice being extremely important and many teams experimenting with different tyre tread. John Goss driving a Ford Falcon blew an engine in practice, but not before setting a time of 2m36.7s which was the second fastest time. Allan Moffat secured pole position with a time of 2m35.8s, which was over 3 seconds faster than the previous years pole time. The Goss Falcon was trailered to Bathurst for an overnight engine change.
The rain showed no signs of stopping for the start of the race on Sunday morning, Bathurst had previously never been run in the wet. Moffat got off to a good start, with the Toranas of Peter Brock and Colin Bond in hot pursuit, weaving their way through the traffic on their hand cut Dunlop tyres. The big Falcons on the other hand were not suited to the wet weather and were unable to find any grip.
By lap 20 the rain had eased and a dry line was starting to appear, enabling Goss to drive the Falcon to the limit, closing the gap to the cars ahead. But on lap 24, Goss’ car failed for the second time with another blown engine. Peter Brock would go on to take the victory, 1 lap ahead of Ford driver John French.
