The 1985 James Hardie 1000 was the 26th running of the Bathurst 1000 touring car race, held on October 6th, 1985 at the Mount Panorama Circuit. It was the first time the race was held exclusively for cars complying with the Australian version of International Group A touring car regulations.
The race would be dominated by the Tom Walkinshaw run Jaguar XJ-S’, who filled the top 3 times in Fridays practice, with the two HDT race cars back in 9th and 10th positions. After Hardies Heros the Holden Dealer Team VK Commodores were really unable to better their positions, with David Parsons outpacing Peter Brock for a spot on the starting grid. This was the only time Peter Brock was out-qualified
by his HDT team mate.
Sunday’s great race was hectic at the front of the pack, with several incidents happening even before the completion of the first lap. As the race went on there would be numerous cars unable to finish, no doubt entertaining for the race fans watching from the circuit and on the television coverage.
After 96 laps, the John Harvey/David Parsons Car 7 Holden VK Commodore broke a timing chain, ending their disappointing Bathurst race, unable to get to the finish line. The sister HDT VK, Car 05 driven by Peter Brock and David Oxton would not finish either, coming to an end after 160 laps. After a disheartening 1985 Bathurst race campaign, the Mobil Holden Dealer Team would hope to return stronger the following year.

Item includes certificate and production number plate, mounted to the chassis.
