After qualifying for the 1995 Bathurst, the top ten was reminiscent of how the race finished the previous year. Craig Lowndes scorched to pole, easily edging out all the others. Starting from the front row of the grid, Lowndes and Richards managed only average starts, leaving Gardner to lead into Hell Corner from the second row of the grid. Perkins tried to squeeze alongside Lowndes and made contact, as a result Perkins' car was pitted while Lowndes' car raced on. By lap 7, the focus was back on Lowndes as he passed Gardner at Griffin's Bend; on lap 8, he had set what was to be the fastest lap of the entire race; on lap 9, he pulled up to just half a second behind Richards, and on lap 10, he was out with engine problems.
Despite the 1995 race being the worst year for the works Holden team in its history of contesting at Bathurst, the two works VRs had set the fastest lap times for the race.
