The 1972 ATCC final at Oran Park also marked the end of the Super Falcons, and their attempt to deliver Ford the Championship win they so desperately wanted.
Expectations were high, the 615bhp Super Falcon was the most powerful and improved production car ever, but it failed to deliver. This was despite all the money and expertise that had been put into the program.
The week prior to Oran Park, Pete Geoghegan joined the Grace Bros Racing Team, sporting new sponsors and a yellow and green livery. The car was performing the way it should have from the beginning, securing pole position for the 40-lap race. Pete bolted from the start and was able to open up a substantial lead, however the engine started cutting out on left hand corners. Three laps from the end Pete conceded the lead and had to settle for 2nd place.
The result of the weekend reflected the overall unfulfilled potential of the Super Falcons and the end of an amazing era...
