Holden HQ SS Sedan (253ci Engine) Infra Red

In August 1972, after the popularity of the two-door coupe, Holden introduced a Limited Edition sedan based on the entry level Belmont to test the public’s reaction to a four-door sports sedan.
This was the HQ SS, a Belmont optioned up to GTS standards with the sports wheels, GTS grille, side vents, blackouts, black boot panel and unusual bonnet stripes from the headlights to the front scuttle panel.
Powered by a 4.2 litre (253ci) V8 paired to a four-speed manual gearbox, it included luxury items such as bucket seats, sports steering wheel and GTS instruments and was available in three distinctive colours: Lettuce Alone, Infra Red or as featured here, Ultra Violet. It became hugely popular.
The HQ series represented the most significant redesign of the Holden since the forties and arguably a high point of GMH styling. The HQ range, in their various configurations of body styles and engine combinations has become an Australian classic, an icon of cars that were “built to last”.
