The Moffat Ford Dealers Team and their XB GT Coupe saved the best until last. 1977 was to be a year that Ford fans will remember for a long time. After three years of the L34 Torana domination, a new chapter was about to be etched into Australian motor racing history.
The Moffat Ford Dealers Team was to be expanded to two cars and they secured HDTs long serving race and rally ace, Colin Bond. In the 1977 Australian Touring Car Championship Moffat and Bond were to drive a pair of Falcon XB GTs prepared by American Race Engineer Carroll Smith. Ford Australia also came to the party and tipped in extra financial and technical support.
Similar to the previous year the 1977 ATCC would consist of 11 rounds, a series of short ‘sprint’ events followed by four ‘enduros’ with Bathurst again being a stand alone event. The first heat at Symmons Plains saw the start of what was the Moffat dominance with he and his team mate Bond recording a one-two finish in both rounds. Brock’s Torana being out powered to finish the round 3rd. The 2nd round was at Calder and once again the Moffat Ford Dealers Team Falcons finished one-two. Bond set the fastest practice lap with Moffat the fastest race lap. Brock offered little resistance winning the start, but was passed by Moffat in the second lap and by the third lap Bond was in second place. Brock and Harvey fought for third and fourth in their L34s.
One week later it was the Oran Park round and yet again Moffat was to be victorious, although this time by only two seconds from Harvey’s L34 with Brock a second further back. After recovering from an early puncture Bond finished eighth in the second Moffat Ford Dealers Team Falcon. The next round was at Amaroo where Moffat scored a pole position and lap record. Brock misjudged the start from the front row and was penalised with a one-minute penalty and although driving hard to finish second on the track, his penalty relegated him to seventh position overall. Bond was second in the official results. For the third time in four meetings the Moffat Ford Dealers Team had finished 1-2.
Moffat’s domination was to be finally challenged not on the track but with the officials at the fifth round at Sandown. A 14 point challenge was lodged on practice day by the Holden Roadways team and supported by Allan Grice. After much speculation and anxiety each point was checked and cleared, the protest was eventually withdrawn and the Fords were cleared to continue their domination. Brock and Harvey’s L34s offered the only challenge to Moffat and Bond, but once again there was nothing they could do and the Moffat Ford Dealers Team recorded another 1-2 win.
In Adelaide it was Peter Brock that almost stopped the Falcon domination. After losing third gear, Brock finished a close third, less than a second down on Moffat who was five seconds behind Bond. Another 1-2 to the Moffat Ford Dealers Team but this time it was Bond to take the glory. Lakeside was the last of the sprint races, and for Moffat his first retirement of the season with a blown engine. Dick Johnson had his first ever ATCC pole position in his XB Falcon. But it was Brock who took the honours from Bond. With only the endurance round remaining Moffat was clearly in front on 74 points with Bond second on 58 and Brock 41. During the lengthy break before Sandown the L34 Toranas were upgraded to their A9X specification, it was also when Moffat’s two XB GT Falcons that had thoroughly dominated the sprint races were upgraded to their XC specification. Moffat continued his season domination in his upgraded XC Falcon with wins at both Adelaide and Surfers Paradise to cement the 1977 ATCC Championship.
