Holden VB Commodore 1980 Australian Touring Car Championship Winner

The 1980 Australian Touring Car Championship was a CAMS motor racing title for drivers of Group C Touring Cars. The Championship, which was the 21st running of the ATCC, began at Symmons Plains Raceway (Tasmania) and ended at Oran Park Raceway (New South Wales) after 8 rounds. There were two classes; Class A: the open class consisting of the Holden Commodore and Torana, Ford Falcon and Chevrolet Camaro. Class B: the Under 3 Litre class consisting of the Alfa Romeo Alfetta, Ford Capri and Escort, Isuzu Gemini, Mazda RX-3 and RX-7 and the Toyota Celica and Corolla. Both classes combining to make some exciting racing over the eight rounds of the Championship.
Peter Brock, in his Holden Dealer Team VB Commodore would have a remarkable season, with no GM-H factory support. Peter secured a consortium of Holden dealers to support the team. For the 1980 season Brock completed a fantastic statistic, taking pole position for all eight rounds of the series and winning four races, including the first three. The Round 1 Symmons Plains race on March 2nd was the Holden Commodore’s debut race win, a great achievement. Points were awarded on a 9-6-4-3-2-1 basis to the first six placegetters at each round. Bonus points were awarded 4-3-2-1 to the top four placegetters. Drivers had to drop their worst score from the eight rounds.
Peter Brock’s four wins at Round 1 Symmons Plains, Round 2 Calder Park, Round 3 Lakeside and Round 6 Surfers Paradise; as well as second placings at Round 4 Sandown, Round 5 Wanneroo and Round 7 Adelaide were more than enough to win the 1980 ATCC title on 79 points, comfortably edging out Kevin Bartlett in his Chevrolet Camaro Z28.
