The year looked grim for the Holden Dealer Team (HDT) when Holden announced in December '79 its withdrawal from motorsport. Prior to the announcement Peter Brock and HDT team manager John Sheppard were developing a prototype racing Commodore, but after the announcement Sheppard resigned leaving Peter Brock back at square one. He needed team organisation and new sponsors fast! He secured a handful of sponsors and went directly to the Holden Dealers for support, getting 56 to commit with the promise of a 'Brock Limited Edition Commodore' that they could sell to the public. But the big advantage over the other competition was the developmental headstart with the new car. Qualifying saw Peter Brock and Jim Richards on the second row of the grid. It was a bright, sunny day for the start of the race. Brock stayed just behind the leaders until an incident in "The Cutting" and time in the pits saw them in 10th place, but a determined Brock broke through to lead the race by lap 50. On lap 57 Brock handed over to Jim Richards. The remainder of the race was smooth sailing and Richards crossed the line to win the 1980 Bathurst 1000, with a time of 6h47m52.7s. Peter Brock and Jim Richards won their third consecutive great race. It was also special in that it was the new VC Commodore's maiden Bathurst victory. The win was Brock's 5th and Richards' 3rd.
