1976 was the year that saw significant change to the ATCC format. It was decided the endurance races that traditionally grouped around the Hardie Ferodo 1000 in October, would become part of the ATCC in addition to the usual sprint format races. The ATCC series now included 11 race events, at 9 different circuits, across 5 states. Ironically, the premier long-distance race, the Hardie Ferodo 1000, was the one endurance race still not included in the Championship.
On the track, the Championship featured a year-long tussle between Allan Moffat in his Ford XB Falcon and Colin Bond in his L34 Torana. Eventually, after three round wins, using three different cars, Allan Moffat won his second ATCC title. The Championship season started at Symmons Plains and after qualifying 3rd, Moffat gambled on wet weather tyres for the start, unfortunately the rain never eventuated and after nursing his tyres he finally finished 6th. The 2nd round at Calder saw Moffat charge through the field and record a convincing win. At the Oran Park 3rd round it was a different story, Allan Grice won the first heat from Moffat in 2nd place and the roles were reversed in the 2nd heat. The overall round win was awarded to Moffat on a count back. Engine problems in practice and then finally a blown engine saw Moffat retire at Sandown. At Amaroo Raceway Moffat finished 7th in the first heat due to an unscheduled pit stop to repair a puncture and a 2nd place in the last heat gave Moffat a credable 3rd place for the round.
After the first five rounds Moffat was leading the Championship when disaster struck. Both his elaborate International transporter and No. 2 XB Coupe were almost totally destroyed by fire at Bridgewater, in the Adelaide Hills, while in transit to the 6th round at Adelaide International Raceway. The next two rounds saw Moffat race in a loaned John Goss newly rebuilt Falcon and the final rounds were raced in his brand new No. 9 red, white and blue “Project Pheonix” XB GT Falcon.
