The 1972 ATCC Series saw the introduction of an under 2000cc division that would score the same amount of points for the class finish as the larger cars, with additional points being awarded to an outright race finish. This change in the scoring system saw a renewed interest in smaller capacity cars, with a Ford Escort of Mike Stillwell almost winning the 1972 Championship.
The 1st race of the season was held at Symmons Plains. This would be the first of many reliability issues for Norm Beechey in his ageing HT Monaro. Beechey blew an engine during practice and would then go onto blow the spare engine while racing for position with Bob Jane in his Camaro. Beechey would suffer retirements in Rounds 2 and 3.
The 4th Round was at Sandown, Allan Moffat in a Mustang took pole position and lead the race throughout. He would go on to set the lap record and was never seriously challenged. Pete Geoghegan in the Super Falcon was competitive but would retire leaving second position
to Jane with Beechey in a distant third. This was the first time for the season that the HT Monaro was able to make it to the finish line in one piece.
The 5th Round held at the Adelaide International Raceway saw Beechey qualify on the second row of the grid, but a blown engine in practice would force him to miss the race. This would be repeated in Round 7 at Surfers Paradise, with another blown engine in practice and recording a DNS.
Bob Jane would take the 1972 Championship from Stillwell and Moffat. With Beechey finishing one race for the season, he could only manage 13th in the Championship. Beechey retired from racing at the end of the 1972 season having competed in the Australian Touring Car Championship since 1963, along the way winning the title in 1965 and 1970.
