E49 Charger Mercury Silver 'Big Tank'

Released in June 1972, the E49 was the ultimate Charger, replacing the three-speed R/T E38. The E49 engine featured the new four-speed Borg Warner gear box that was well suited to the powerful Hemi engine. Chrysler only manufactured 149 E49 R/T Chargers, making them the most collectible Chrysler R/T vehicle produced.

engine of the E49 produced an additional 22 extra bhp over its predecessor. This extra power, combined with the four-speed gear box, resulted in a both flexible and high performance package.
The E49 was the most powerful six-cylinder production car in the world at the time. The E49 is on record as being the fastest accelerating production car ever made in Australia, until the 5.7 litre Holden of 2001.
Proudly Australian
The Australian public fell in love with Chargers, they accounted for more than 50% of Valiant sales. It is important to note that the R/T (Road and Track) Chargers had the most Australian manufactured parts of all the Muscle Cars at the time. The only major foreign components were the triple Weber carburettors from Italy.
Identifying the E49
The E49 engine could only be ordered with Charger R/T, the A95 'interior pack', the Sure Grip axle and either the A84 or A87 'Track Pack'. A4 on the optional black fender stripe distinguished the E49 from the E38. In general, the bonnet blackouts were not available on the E49s.
The Power of the Engine
The six cylinder Chrysler Hemi engine was conceived in the US as a truck engine, before significant improvements were made prior to production in Australia. The E49 'six-pack' engine had triple 45DCOE Weber carburettors, a new competition camshaft, valve springs and tuned length exhaust extractors. For durability, a special shot-peened crankshaft, conrods, competition pistons and rings, a baffled sump and twin plate heavy duty clutch completed the package.
